I believe that a true independent country will leave behind their colonial name in favor for something more suitable. Impossible you say? A few countries have done it. Sri Lanka used to be called Ceylon, the name given by the Portuguese.
Every time you hear Philippines, Filipino or anything derived from it such as Pinoy or Noypi, we are in essence bowing down to the ghost of King Philip II of Spain. That is why I always cringe inside when I hear people should Filipino or Pinoy pride. It’s either a) Hypocrisy b) Confusion or c) Allegiance to Spain.
Our Moro brothers in the south understand this, I wish that the majority of us indios could also break the mental shackles.
Interesting note, it brings me back to an exerpt from one of my Philippine history books. [The Philippines, A Unique Nation by Sonia M. Zaide]
“Because it was the foreigners who named our country, some Filipinos have proposed new names for the Philippines. The Katipunan general, Artemio Ricarte, wanted to call us the “Rizaline Republic”, after Jose Rizal. Another name, “Maharlika”, was proposed by former President Ferdinand Marcos, after his dream of making this nation great. Modern nationalists have objected to the present name of the Philippines because of its colonial connotation, so they want to have the name changed.”
I like ‘Maharlika’, lets join Ceylon, Myanmar and Rhodesia and release the Philippines from its colonial bonds.
I also like Maharlika but I remember reading that there’s a weird meaning when translated to Sanskrit. I think more people would’ve bought into Maharlika if Marcos wasn’t such an ass. Good idea but the people saw it as his personal ego talking. Rizal would be a bad idea since he wasn’t a true revolutionary.
I thikn its too late now, we are already known as Filipinos. And its already past the 100 yr independence for the philippines.
I think it can still be done. Other countries have done it. The tough part is getting the people to de-slave themselves. There’s also the cost factor too. How much would it cost to change all the documents, signs, etc.
i heard from a person from national historical institute there’s also a suggestion to rename phils with luzviminda or luzvimindan. parang nakakapanibago naman kung papalitan pa…
ceemart, my history professor said mali-mali ang info ng tatay ni sonia zaide sa mga history books he made kasi hindi sya pure pinoy. could it be na may mali rin sa book ng anak nya?
well you know one thing i didnt like about the book was that it seemed like everything she wrote about had a religious background or explanation. Theres alot of things unclear about Philippine history anyway I wouldnt doubt that some info may be wrong.
Guys, I’m actually working on a project to educate the people about this issue. As you can see with the voting, some that “independence” as being literal. If you want to help, leave a comment.
Re: the book, anything that uses religion as a platform is questionable.
Luzvimindan is kinda long in my opinion but it’s still better than the Philippines.
So AMERICA should rename their country too?
Remember “America” is also named after the Italian explorer “Americus Vespucius”.
A Name is just a name. The relevant thing is how we are known as. It’s sad that The “Filipinos” are known with a lot of off-putting things.
Rich: That’s a common argument. America doesn’t have the colonial stigma. True, a name is a name but what if you name “shithead”, “nigger” or “monkey”?
