teri hatcher
“Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines” said Susan (Teri Hatcher) on the September 30 episode of ABC’s Desperate Housewives.

I revived about a dozen emails from relatives, spam and a real gem from NaFFAA.

The National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA) is demanding an apology from the producers of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” over an episode that aired on September 30 disparaging medical practitioners who were trained in the Philippines.

In condemning the racially-biased and culturally insensitive remarks, NaFFAA National Chair Alma Kern also points out the need for cultural awareness training among Hollywood writers, producers and actors. “It is outrageous that in this day and age, popular media continue to demean and insult Filipinos in America,” Kern says. “For more than one hundred years, we have made valuable contributions to this country, not only as health professionals but as child care providers and home care givers. These dedicated, diligent and competent workers do not deserve to be slandered and stereotyped in such a prejudicial manner if only to evoke laughter.”

Who cares? Some show with lots of fine ass MILFS say something bad about your country and you get pissed and want to protest? What about protesting the lame show? The show is about bored fine housewives that fuck a lot and we get mad about a disparaging dumb line about how a TV whore distrusts Filipino doctors? It’s not like the president said it. What do you expect? We can LOL at the Arabs but when the chickens come home to roost, it’s a different ball game. Hit too close to home?

I’m not pissed because I know the context. If you don’t like what was said, fine, but protect their right to say it. Plus, Teri Hatcher is fine.

Petitions don’t work. Boycotts don’t work. Focus your hypocritical anger elsewhere.

Is she another “desperate housewife”???

It definitely rang a familiar bell, (looks at Malu Fernandez’s case) We Filipinos should check our “pride” a bit, we’re really getting out of hand with our furious and head-on reactions to every criticism or comments thrown at us. And this time because of a line from a character on a struggling series that obviously just upped its ante? Hey, aren’t we in many ways guilty as well?

Did we ever stop to think that maybe they have basis for such a blatant remark?

As for an apology? No way. As to who really needs cultural awareness? All of us. And boy, we really do have to see how “we”, ourselves, do to evoke laughter to our viewers.

As to me being biased and unpatriotic? Just being honest, it’s just another sad and awful truth.

I agree with both Obz and Nimsaj.

Don’t they have better things to do than make a big deal out of a one liner? Gawd. Seriously.

the filipino goverment should focus on more important issues like the neverending corruption.

and to think that filipinos think what terry said is degrading PUHLEASE! lets build a stable philippine goverment then we can focus on these petty issues.

Okay so ABC did apologize, “chuckles”. But the Filipino - American medical community is considering pushing it further in court? Hey, we’ve got what we want, what more do we need??? Ah, “pinoy pride” indeed.

I read about a possible class action suit. What a bunch of over sensitive pussies we are.

Family Guy makes fun of filipinos numerous times, no one says anything about that.

Mr.O on 4 October, 2007 at 10:40 pm #

Cee, it’s coz Family Guy is a cartoon. You can get away with shit. If desperate housewives was a toon, nobody would say shit.

Some guy named Kevin Nadal, 29, a Filipino-American college lecturer who lives in New York, posted the online petition. He suggested that “the show’s producers and ABC executives could make a more substantial gesture than an apology, through scholarships or donations for Filipino and Filipino-Americans and community groups.”(from http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Headlines&p=49&type=2&sec=24&aid=20071004157) hey kevin! are you high?!
look, i love the philippines too coz that’s where i was born and grew up but i just realized that filipinos back home are racist too. they just don’t know it bcoz they have no idea what real racism is. so michael v. making fun of “bumbay” or “chekwa” is nothing. “explain before you complain my fellow pinoys.”

So they are also demanding an apology from Teri Hatcher herself…

I have just heard it from my “ate”. My sister, being a big fan and avid viewer of the show (in fact she collects it on DVD); I’ve asked her about Teri Hatcher’s character and also her opinion about the matter. “Sira-ulo naman yun eh, parang may topak”, she said in describing Ms. Hatcher’s character “Susan Mayer”. Even Mr. Wiki agreed by describing that the character is a known “klutz” (a clumsy or stupid person; a dolt). She said that the controversial episode hasn’t reached our shores yet but she did agree that the writers of the show went overboard. I guess I have to ask her again until she saw it firsthand.

i thought this issue was over. dozens of fil-am doctors, nurses, other healthcare professionals, and community activists picketed The Disney Store at the corner of Post and Powell streets in Union Square downtown Saturday, October 13. What the hell do they want? this is embarassing..
